In this case both the field description and laboratory testing by others missed the obvious oversize materials within the pavement leading to obvious construction difficulties and methodology changes once revealed.

In the end a good result however poor planning (or investigation) will often lead to cost blowouts, unexpected finding and an upset client and/or contractors.
